QUESTION

I’m 63 and about to retire. I’ll be offered a retiree health plan. Can I look for better coverage and subsidies in the Marketplace instead?

ANSWER

Yes, if you want to obtain coverage through the Marketplace, you may do so, and you may be eligible for premium tax credits to help you pay for your coverage. Subsidies are calculated based on the price of available plans and household income; lower income individuals are eligible for greater subsidy amounts, and some higher income individuals may not receive subsidies. Eligibility for retiree coverage will not affect your eligibility for Marketplace coverage and subsidies. (26 U.S.C. § 5000A; 26 U.S.C. § 36B-2)
