QUESTION

We are a low-income family and need health insurance, but haven’t had any major life changes recently. Can we enroll in a Marketplace plan outside of open enrollment?

ANSWER

Possibly. If your household income does not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty level, in most states you may enroll in a Marketplace plan and apply for premium tax credits once per month, throughout the year. If your income is less than 138 percent of the federal poverty level, in most states you may qualify for Medicaid, which offers year-round enrollment.
